Due to the success of Dr. No, the second Bond film had double the budget of the first movie. This is clearly visible in several sequences. The gypsy camp attack, the bomb in Kerim Bey’s office, the helicopter explosion, and the boat chase scene at the end of the movie. There’s a lot more action than the first film. There was a lot of walking around in Dr. No. There’s not so much of that in From Russia with Love.
And this movie starts to get into SPECTRE and what would become a re-occurring villain organization in the series. Because every hero needs a nemesis, right? And they want James Bond dead. But he just keeps slipping through their evil fingers. Because that’s what secret agents do.
And just like Dr. No, the script for this movie had to have some rewrites to avoid certain Cold War issues that were going on at the time. The plot involved a criminal organization using the Russians to infiltrate MI6 to steal a secret device. But because of the political climate at the time, they had to make sure that the film didn’t cause any sort of conflict, even accidentally.
But leave it to James Bond to find a way out of any situation. From Russia with Love comes off as one of one of the most favored films in the James Bond franchise. Several of the actors that have played Bond have said that it’s their favorite Bond film. And it won several awards the year that it came out, including “best cinematography” and a golden globe for best original song.
So, yeah. Go and see From Russia with Love. Not only is it a James Bond film, but it’s one of the most famous James Bond films. And when movies are really famous, they’re either famous for being really good or really bad. And this isn’t really bad. So that only leaves the other option. And remember, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
