Every time I see an old Ben Stiller movie, I end up gaining more respect for the guy. I end up finding out that he wrote it, or he directed it, or something else. When I was younger, I never gave Ben Stiller a second look. I never really thought that much about Ben Stiller. He was in some funny movies, sure. But he wasn’t like, somebody that you’re associating with the biggest names in comedy. Now I’m seeing all of these older movies and finding out that he’s the one who wrote them or directed them or something else, and it just kind of blows my mind. Like, I had no idea Ben Stiller was this talented all those years ago. It really changes my whole perspective of the guy.
Because I’ve had it in my head all these years that Zoolander was a stupid movie. And granted, I’d never seen it. So, I was going off of what critics said back when it came out. And in all that time, I never took the time to see it myself. So, I guess that’s my fault. But now that I have seen it, I have to say, it’s actually a pretty funny movie. I was laughing heartily through a lot of it.
And it’s not witty, sarcastic humor. It’s not a smart, ironic comedy. It’s not that kind of movie. It’s a movie about a stupid male model. What kind of movie do you honestly think it’s going to be? It’s a stupid movie with stupid jokes. That doesn’t make them bad jokes. It just makes them stupid. And if you can’t get down off your high horse and laugh at stupidity once in a while, you need to find yourself a better sense of humor. Because it’s you who’s really missing out.
Another thing I pointed out while I was watching it was Ben Stiller’s acting ability. He has such range. He can do so many things in so many different movies. Like, in this movie, he talked in this soft, under-tone voice the entire time. He never raised his voice even to normal speaking levels, it seemed like. Just imagine the talent it took to keep your voice controlled at that spot the entire time you’re doing all of your lines. It’s actually really impressive when you think about it. And then you think about the rest of Ben Stiller’s movie roles, and you’re like “wow! Ben Stiller really has done some amazing things when you look at it all at the same time.”
So, yeah. Go and see Zoolander. It’s good for your funny bone. It’s good for your fashion sense. And maybe you’ll pick up a few tips about skin-care. You never know. But the only thing you’re missing out on is not seeing it. Because it’s definitely a good time. And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
