The remake of Point Break, made in 2015, is an action/thriller movie about an extreme sports athlete who joins the FBI and is later used for an undercover assignment to stop eco terrorists from committing further jobs across the world. The movie is a multinational production, being funded by American, German, and Chines companies. It stars Andrew A. Kosove, Broderick Johnson, John Baldecchi, David Valdes, Christopher Taylor, and Kurt Wimmer.
The only thing I can really say about this movie is that it’s bad. It is a bad movie. It’s nothing more than a bastardized version of the original Point Break. Taking the names, basic formula, and even some of the actual shots from the first movie, and just twisting them into some new, lesser version of themselves. With some literal, straight up plagiarism at one point. They flat out recreate the scene from the original movie where Keanu Reeves rolls over onto his back and fires his gun up into the air. That iconic scene that everybody knows Point Break for. This movie just redid it, and thought nobody was going to notice.
But that’s not the only thing that’s bad about this movie. There’s lots of other stuff. The plot is essentially pointless. Most of the time is spent doing extreme sports. It’s basically a long Mountain Dew commercial. But aside from that, the bad guys aren’t bank robbers in this one. They’re apparently eco-terrorists, on some sort of spiritual journey. And they’re snowboarding down mountains and big wave surfing towards enlightenment or something else that doesn’t make any sense.
And let’s not forget the special effects in this movie aren’t anything to write home about either. Because you know that these people aren’t actually jumping off these mountains or climbing up these cliffs with no safety equipment in real life. These are all special effects. And they’re not the best special effects to say the least. Shaky cameras, obvious green screens at some points. If you’re gonna make an action movie, and the majority of your time is going to be spent doing dangerous stuff, allocate the majority of your budget to the special effects department…
Because they sure didn’t put the majority of their budget towards the actors, who were less than phenomenal, let’s just say. I was far from impressed by every interaction the lead characters had with not only each other, but with everybody else. For an action movie, they’re both extremely uninterested in being there. And it’s not just the acting. I think the script has a lot to do with it as well. The script doesn’t give them a whole lot to work with, so their performances can’t be that great anyway.
So, no. Don’t go see Point Break, the 2015 remake. It’s not worth it. Watch the original. It’s a much better movie. This is a real waste of time. I’m actually mad that I watched it after it was over. It left a bad taste in my mouth and ruined the good name of the original movie. But, c’est la vie, as some guy with a beret once said. And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
