The Sheep Detectives is a 2026 mystery comedy directed by Kyle Balda and written by Craig Mazin. The movie has an ensemble cast including Hugh Jackman, Nicholas Bruan, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, Hong Chau, and Emma Thompson, with the sheep being voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, and Brett Goldstein. The Sheep Detectives follows a flock of sheep as they try to find the killer of their murdered shepherd.
I really liked this movie. I thought it was a lot of fun. Having a whole community of sheep trying to get together at the same time would probably be a complicated process. Because sheep aren’t exactly known for their ability to focus. This movie makes light of that situation on several occasions as the sheep are constantly distracted and, just for various reasons in general, are having trouble solving the mystery.
The sheep aren’t the only characters in the movie, though. The townspeople play a good part in it as well. Hugh Jackman has a comparatively small role when you consider the rest of the movie. He’s really only in the first 10-15 minutes before he dies. The movie is really about his murder than it is about him. If anything, I’d say the star of the movie is the town cop who ends up solving the murder. He’s probably on screen more than anybody else in the film. Except for the sheep, maybe.
And special effects have really come a long way in the last few years. I’m not saying you can’t tell that these aren’t CGI sheep. I’m just saying, if they weren’t talking, you’d have no reason to think they weren’t real sheep. It’s pretty good animation. And considering some of the CGI disasters that I’ve seen over the years, that’s a pretty good compliment. (Talking to you, Michael Bay…)
So, yeah. Go and see The Sheep Detectives. It’s a family friendly movie with a lot of laughs and a lesson or two mixed in about love and acceptance like any other family movie. Plus, it’s full of talking sheep. And if that doesn’t win you over right there, I gotta tell you, I honestly think you’re the problem. And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
