Unbreakable is a 2000 superhero thriller film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It stars Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, and Robin Wright. The movie centers around David Dunn (Willis) who survives a train wreck completely unharmed, while all of the other passengers are killed. He is soon approached by an extremely fragile, disabled comic book store owner (Jackson), who believes that Dunn might possess superhuman abilities.
I didn’t think this was a bad movie. I can see what he was going for with the whole superhero origin story. I liked the dichotomy between Dunn and Mr. Glass. There was a good juxtoposition of characters there. As far as comic books go, that’s classic comic book theory. The good guy on one end of the spectrum, the bad guy on the other end.
I wasn’t a fan of the script, though. I think all of M. Night Shyamalan’s movies are all the same. They all drag on really slowly. I know they’re not supposed to be action movies or anything. But, even for suspense movies, it seems like the movie goes at half speed the entire time.
And even when something remotely interesting is happening, it doesn’t happen for long. And it’s only just a brief interlude for another long period of dialogue that really doesn’t lead to anything of any real consequence. All of M. Night Shyamalan’s movies can be boiled down to about five or 10 minutes when you really think about it.
I was reading that this movie was commercially successful, and that they made sequels almost 20 years later in 2017 and 2019. I’m not one to go along with the mainstream, so it’s no wonder that I don’t see this movie well as others do. That being said, I didn’t hate it. I just wouldn’t watch it more than once. So, yeah. Go and see Unbreakable. I mean, why not? And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
