Star Wars: Clone Wars – Volume 1 is a series of cartoons made for Cartoon Network that was released on DVD. These cartoons came out in between Episode 2 and Episode 3, and are not considered “official” canon in the Star Wars universe. They do, however, fill in a lot of holes and George Lucas was even consulted with while they were being made. So, even though they’re not “official” canon, the characters come up quite a bit outside of conversations about Star Wars.
The cartoons were made by Genndy Tartakovsky. For those of you who don’t know, he was the creator of cartoons like Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack on Cartoon Network. A very unique animation style. Samurai Jack especially was very stylized and musically driven. These cartoons are a lot like Samurai Jack. Action packed, with very crisp, stylized animation that makes it entertaining to watch.
Another thing I like about these cartoons is that they each have their own story to tell. They’re short 12 minute episodes. That gives the writers a chance to bounce around and play out a whole sequence instead of trying to set up what would be an animated movie.
Not that I couldn’t watch an animated movie by Genndy Tartakovsky. God knows how many times I’ve watched this. But it’s easier to watch a single cartoon than it is to watch an hour and a half long movie. Although, if all of the cartoons are as good as these, it doesn’t really matter how long it goes on, I’ll keep watching anyway.
Plus, just because it is Star Wars, and because of the story and the dialogue, it makes it even more endearing. Not only is it just straight up good animation, but it’s also a part of one of the greatest stories ever told. I mean, honestly, what else could you be asking for?
So, yeah. Go and see Star Wars: Clone Wars – Volume 1. Not only are they some great cartoons, but it’ll fill in some of the lost information that you might be missing if you’re not as big of a Star Wars nerd as I am. And as always, may the force be with you…
