Clerks 2 is a 2006 comedy written and directed by Kevin Smith. It is the sequel to the first Clerks movie and brings back several of the main characters to reprise their roles. The film stars Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson who played Dante and Randall in the first movie. As well as Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith, who also played their characters, Jay and Silent Bob in the first movie. This film also stars Rosario Dawson and Trevor Fehrman as Becky and Elias respectively.
This is a very funny movie for a sequel. Though, not exactly on par with the first Clerks, this is still a highly laughable film. It has all the same wit and snappy dialogue that the first movie had, only with different topics and in a different venue. The addition of Elias adds another straight man for Randall to play off of. Making his obnoxious character even more outlandish by just how meek Elias is.
And this movie is made far enough into Kevin Smith’s timeline that he can start having people from former movies making cameos. As he did several times in this movie, with Ethan Suplee, Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Scott Mosier, and Walt Flanagan. If you’re a Kevin Smith fan, they’re not cameos, they’re just regular appearances. But for people who are just seeing these movies independently of each other, there is a connection.
Also, having the setting in a restaurant gave Kevin Smith the opportunity to have a lot more different kinds of customers come in and be characters in the movie, but if you’ll notice, the movie wasn’t really about the customers at all. The movie focused on the crew, even when they weren’t in the restaurant. In the first movie, there was a lot of focus on the customers and interactions with the people who came into the store. In this one, they only interacted with like four or five people the entire time. I really think he could’ve made that a much bigger part of the script and done something with it.
The big dance number I thought really interrupted things as well. That kind of came out of left field and seemed to just be there for no reason. Like, I can see the novelty in it. I understand what he was trying to do, trying to tie it in with teaching Dante to dance and everything. I GET the joke. I just don’t think the joke worked. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe I’m nitpicking. Maybe I’m being too critical. I don’t know.
Nevertheless, I still think it’s a great movie. So, yeah. Go and see Clerks 2. It’s a good follow-up to the first movie. And a good movie to even stand on its own. It’s full of laughs and you really don’t need the context of the first movie to watch it. Just have a good time. And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
