I have seen some bad movies in my time. I’ve written about them on this blog. But this reboot of Ghostbusters is practically disgraceful. And before you start going off on me about being misogynistic and not liking the movie just because they’re women, you’ve got me all wrong. Now, I’m not even going to lie and pretend that I’m not sexist. But in all fairness, I make fun of everybody equally. So, ladies, you don’t get any special treatment. But it’s not a bad movie because they’re women. There’s lots of other people in the movie. It’s a bad movie AND they’re women. There’s a difference.
It’s a bad script. It’s a poorly developed plot. And it’s not like any one of them are any good at acting. If you can even call it that. And it drags on for way, way too long. It’s 2 hours and 15 minutes long for god’s sake. Kate McKinnon can make herself weird. That’s good character acting. I’ll give her that one. Leslie Jones isn’t even acting. She’s just being Leslie Jones. And the other two are the same character they’ve ever been in any other movie they’ve ever been in.
And the amount of cameos in this movie goes above and beyond at a certain point. And I’ll tell you exactly why. Nostalgia. When you realize your movie is bad, you have to give the audience something so that they’ll at least have something to like about your mud pie of a movie. So, the director packed in as many names as he could from the original to make people go “hey! Look who it is!” I did it numerous times throughout the movie.
And not only was it just the names that were plagiarized, but when they call this a “reboot” of the original, what they’re really trying to say is “remake”. They lift numerous elements right out of the first movie. A couple of things from the second movie. And then essentially combine the endings of the first two movies to make this one? I read a review that used the words “lazy writing”. And I, quite frankly, couldn’t agree more.
So, if you want my honest opinion, no. Don’t go see Ghostbusters. It’s a gigantic waste of two hours. There’s plenty of other movies out there that you can waste your time on. And you won’t have to spend the entire movie thinking about “how much longer is this going to take to be over…?” And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
