Ghostbusters 2 is considered a failure for some reason. But that doesn’t make any sense when you think about it. On a budget of $30-40 million, Ghostbusters 2 made $215 million worldwide at the box office. That’s $170 million profit margin. That sounds pretty successful to me. The reason it’s considered a failure is because of how successful the first Ghostbusters was. And that’s a ridiculously high bar to set. You also have to consider all of the movies that came out at the same time as Ghostbusters 2. The Karate Kid: Part 3, Star Trek: Part 5, When Harry Met Sally, Lethal Weapon 2, and Tim Burton’s Batman. These ended up being some of the biggest movies of the decade. And they all came out within a month of each other. The numbers are almost unfair when you think about it.
Because, I’ll tell ya, I watch Ghostbusters 2, and it makes me laugh. But that’s the way it went when it first came out. Critics didn’t like it, but it went over well with fans. Critics thought it was too much like the original. Yeah, but, it’s a sequel. What’s wrong with it being like the original? Tom Cruise has made the same movie 8 times and critics still call him a good actor for some reason.
Ghostbusters 2 is kind of similar to the first one, but is actually very different in a lot of ways. I mean, there are still ghosts, of course. But, it’s a very different storyline, and a very different style of dialogue. The characters are mainly the same. They have the same personalities as in the first movie, because you can’t really change that. Mainly because there was a cartoon going on at the time, The Real Ghostbusters, that the movie was trying to tie into. So, they wanted to keep the movie as much in step with the cartoon as possible because of the popularity of the Slimer character.
But according to critics, it’s practically the same movie. And that’s just not true. And it’s a real shame that this movie doesn’t get the credit that it deserves. Because it really is a good comedy. Not quite as good as the original. But what sequel is ever as good as the original. Not many, that’s for sure. But it certainly isn’t the failure of a movie that the industry says it is.
So, yeah. Go and see Ghostbusters 2. Because you watched the first Ghostbusters. And I can only assume you liked it. Who doesn’t? So, you owe it to yourself to watch the second one. If for nothing else than to prove all these uppity critics wrong. And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
