Maybe it was because I was 13 years old when it came out, but I’ve always found Men in Black to be an entertaining movie. It was a hugely successful summer blockbuster. And from a movie producer’s point of view, it checks all the boxes: explosions, check. Popular young male lead, check. Some offensive language so kids will think it’s cool, check. Throw in some quotable lines and you have yourself one masterpiece of a movie. And ironically enough, Men in Black just so happens to have a whole bunch of quotable lines in it.
It really is a good script, though. I haven’t watched it in a long time. And I’m not sure why I’ve had the urge to watch it recently. But when I did watch it, I realized how much fun it is. And, despite the language, it is a kids movie. A young adults movie, at any rate. But you know who the demographic is. And if you can’t sit back and enjoy a movie like that, what’s the point of watching movies, you know?
I didn’t even know that Men in Black was a comic book until just recently. I thought it was just this movie. But apparently, this movie was based off of a comic book and the comic book was based off of the conspiracy theory of there being actual governmental agents in black suits and sunglasses hiding aliens from the public. Now, anybody who knows me knows that I am a big conspiracy theorist. And I’m not saying that a governmental agency like the Men in Black doesn’t exist. But, if it did exist, I hardly think they would make a wildly popular movie, highlighting their exploits. Or would they…?
One thing I have to say about Men in Black is that for 1997, the special effects are surprisingly good. They used Industrial Lights and Magic, so they were using the top of the industry. But still, it was 1997, you know? That’s like, LAST century for god’s sake. He said, as he goes and lays down for a nap…
So, yeah. Go and see Men in Black. It’s a good time for what it’s supposed to be. You know what you’re getting, and then you get it. The poster promised a buddy comedy about aliens. The movie is exactly that. Jay and Kay are buddies. It’s a an action movie with elements of comedy. And there are aliens. Ask and you shall receive. And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
