Demolition Man is always fun to watch because it’s a very quotable movie. There’s so many great individual scenes in it, just apart from the movie as a whole. Now, I’m never going to be the one to say that Sylvester Stallone is a great actor. And I’m not gonna start now. But I have to say, that in this movie, in a few of the scenes, it was Stallone’s acting that made it funny, not the script. You gotta hand it to him. He did it this time. Good job, Sly.
Speaking of the script, though. It really is a very well-crafted screenplay. With all the little one-liners. And the running gags throughout the movie, like the three seashells. Which, to this day, is still an online debated topic. I’ve seen it. I’ve been to the reddit debates. They’re heated. People get up in arms about that sort of thing.
And at some point, you almost have to call it a comedy as well as an action movie. I mean, I know it’s not labeled as a comedy, but I kind of think it should be. They spend more than half the movie making jokes and being sarcastic. If they’re not shooting, they’re joking. That’s a comedy in my opinion. If you spend most of a movie being scary, it qualifies as a horror movie, right? It’s only logical to go the other way.
Another tidbit of information that’s really pointless, but you might find interesting nonetheless: On the original Demolition Man DVD, the restaurant that Cocteu takes John Spartan and Lenina Huxley to is “Taco Bell”, because that is the restaurant that won the franchise wars. But in later streaming releases, it changes to “Burger King”. How do I know this? Because I own the original Demolition Man DVD…
So, yeah. Go and see Demolition Man. It’s funny and full of explosions. “Demolitions” if you will. It’s got a pretty good script, and some pretty good acting to go along with it. It Sylvester Stallone though, so don’t be expecting any Oscar worthy performances. But despite it being what it is, it’s always been one of my favorite movies. And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
