I think the best part of Promising Young Woman was all of the notable actors that were in the movie. I’m not going to call it a “star studded” cast per se, but a lot of the actors are at least of notable mention. I think Molly Shannon is probably the biggest name in the movie. If for no other reason than she’s been around and in Hollywood for a long time. But at the same time, Jennifer Coolidge and Clancy Brown have been around for longer than Molly Shannon has, and I would put her name above theirs in the “fame” category”.
But aside from the star power, the movie itself is rather underwhelming. The dialogue is flat. The acting is less than energetic. At least the plot makes sense. Even if it is some sort of feminist tripe meant to get people riled up for no particular reason. Which, I can’t help but imagine a movie like this did. Anything to get people at each other’s throats, right?
And apparently, this film won Best Original Screenplay at the 93rd Oscars and was nominated for several others, including best actress for Carey Mulligan. Which I find hilarious, because Carey Mulligan is not that great of an actress. She looks confused most of the time she’s on screen. And I just didn’t like her as a leading lady.
I don’t know why it won any awards. I wouldn’t recommend it to anybody. Maybe it won awards because of the times that we’re living in and people wanted to be politically correct and be on the woman’s side for once? Give the empowered woman a good run? That sounds awfully sexist, and it probably is, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong.
So, no. Don’t go see Promising Young Woman. You’re not missing anything. If anything, you’re saving yourself two hours of bad acting and bad storytelling. And a bad ending as well. Because the ending is rather anticlimactic too. So, there’s that. And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
