The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite films. And I’m not really a drama person. It’s just such a good story. And everybody in it is so good, it just makes it even better. I have the book too. And it stays relatively close to the source material. It only takes a few creative differences near the end, because it’s a two hour long movie, and not an actual book. So, it has to compress things. Which is understandable. That’s not that big of a deal. But aside from that it’s a nice little accompaniment to the actual book.
Guy Pearce is constantly playing a villain because he just looks like a villain. His face looks evil. He has this naturally snide look about him that just makes him look like a bad guy. If Guy Pearce tried to play a good guy, you wouldn’t believe it. You would just be like “that guy’s totally gonna betray somebody sooner or later…” Because he just looks like the villain.
Jim Caviezel, on the other hand, played Jesus in The Passion of the Christ. He’s got good guy credentials all over his acting resume. You can’t really get typecast as Jesus, though. There’s not a whole lot of opportunities for that. That was really a one time thing.
Luiz Guzman is also great in this movie. Luiz Guzman is great in everything he does. It’s funny how Luiz Guzman is never the actual “star” of a movie, but he’s been in so many great movies and he’s been so many great characters that everybody knows his name and knows who he is. He’s like, one of the most successful supporting actors of all time.
And Henry Cavill, who is Superman in some of the earlier DCEU movies like Man of Steel and Justice League for those of you who don’t know, is Albert Mondego in this movie. And he’s only 15 years old. It’s his earliest movie role.
So, yeah. Go and see The Count of Monte Cristo. It’s a great movie with some great acting, a fantastic cast, and a brilliant script that’s fairly close to the source material for a Hollywood movie. And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
