Mortal Kombat 2 is a movie made for the fans. If you don’t like video games, and if you don’t like Mortal Kombat, you’re probably not going to like the movie. This movie wasn’t meant to draw in new customers. It was meant to make the old ones happy. You can tell by one of the lines in the movie where a guy is talking to Johnny Cage about his aging career and Johnny says “that shit went out in the 90s.” And the guy turns around and mumbles “well, I thought it was cool…”
It’s full of easter eggs and hidden references that you would have to be a fan of the game to pick up on. You have to know the story of Mortal Kombat to even get some of the references. They’re not even explained in the movie. So, you can tell this movie wasn’t made to try and win any awards or anything like that. It was made for the people that it was made for. Which is cool. I’m a huge fan of Mortal Kombat. I’m a huge gamer, and an old school Mortal Kombat player myself. (I mained Mileena, just for reference…) And I can tell you right now, for the people who are looking for a Mortal Kombat movie, this gives them exactly what they’re looking for.
Coming off the first movie, this picks up the story pretty well. It’s hard to make a movie about fighting games, because you have to have a reason to keep fighting. The entire point of Mortal Kombat was that it was a tournament. But after the first game, it wasn’t a tournament anymore. It became an entire storyline and its own universe with people betraying each other and robots traveling back in time and gods bringing people back from the dead. It just started getting crazy. And that’s what’s going to start happening with these movies. They can just introduce any of the characters from the games at any time because, why not?
And the stories are almost endless. The cyber ninjas should be coming up in the next movie. Cyrax, Sektor, and Smoke. I want to see how they do that. Whether it’s going to be practical or CGI. Maybe a little of both. Sektor shot rockets out of his chest. You can’t really do practical effects when it comes to something like that.
So, yeah. Go and see Mortal Kombat 2. If you’re into video games, particularly Mortal Kombat, you’re gonna love it. If you’re just into martial arts or action movies, you’ll still probably like it. If you’d rather watch The Devil Wears Prada 2, this probably isn’t the movie for you. You have to know your demographic. And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
