I didn’t think Supergirl was terrible. I have to say, I really wasn’t expecting all that much to begin with. Supergirl isn’t the kind of character you can make a movie out of. But movie producers don’t know anything about comics, do they? They just want to know what the next big thing is going to be. Honestly, the only reason I wanted to see Supergirl in the first place was because I wanted to see what they were going to do with Lobo. And even that was more than a little disappointing.
Krypto was my favorite part of the whole movie, and he got hit with a poison dart in the first 20 minutes or something like that. The story itself is pretty weak on the whole. A party girl, has to take responsibility, stop partying, and go save her dog before he dies? I mean, I can see who that movie would appeal to. But, it’s not going to be enough to make a profit off of the money that you’re going to spend to make a big budget movie. Especially with someone like Jason Mamoa on the cast. He doesn’t come cheap. David Corenswet isn’t that big of a star. But, he’s Superman now. So, his price tag is rising as well.
And unfortunately, for this girl, this movie was a big flop for the studio. $126 million box office made on a $170 million budget. Those aren’t good numbers. That’s called “taking a bath” in monetary terms. That doesn’t do wonders for your career. David Corenswet and Jason Mamoa can chalk this up as a loss and go about their business. They were essentially cameos in this movie. But Milly Alcock was the star. She was Supergirl. When people say “Supergirl was a bad movie” she’s the face they’re going to be thinking of. Nobody’s blaming Krypto for this being a bad movie. As they shouldn’t
That’s the one thing you can give it credit for. It had good special effects. But it’s 2026. How can you not have good special effects in 2026? Isn’t that pretty much standard by now? That’s like trying to impress people by selling them a car with seatbelts. It’s like “do you sell cars without seatbelts? Is that even a thing?” It just doesn’t make any logical sense when you really think about it.
But, all in all, I didn’t hate it. I wouldn’t watch it again. But I think that as a fan of comic books, and a fan of movies, that you should see it, just because. If for nothing else, because Krypto is so great. And Kryptonian puppies are so cute. So, yeah, go and see Supergirl. And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
