Superman

Superman, the 2025 movie, is the most recent take on DC Comics’ flagship character. It isn’t an origin story, however. But, simply a story from a younger Clark Kent/Superman, before many of the trials and tribulations of being the Man of Steel have gotten to him yet. Because, obviously, being the protector of Earth can be a stressful profession. And when you have to do it while keeping your identity secret at the same time, it makes it all the more difficult.

David Corenswet plays Clark Kent/Superman. While Nicholas Hoult plays his counterpart and perpetual nemesis, Lex Luthor. Rachel Brosnahan plays Superman’s co-worker and love interest, Lois Lane. Some other important roles in the film are filled by Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen.

I have to say, I liked Henry Cavill more as Superman, but I think this was a better movie than Man of Steel was. I know that seems counterintuitive, but there’s just something about Henry Cavill that makes him Superman. Like there’s something about Robert Downey Jr. that makes him Tony Stark. It just feels right.

But this is a good movie for several reasons. One, it gets the dichotomy of what Superman and Lex Luthor really is. Lex hates Superman. Not for any justifiable reason, either. He just hates what Superman is. He hates that Superman can do what he can do. So, he wants to take that away from him. And he’s willing to put the entire world in danger to get what he wants.

And two, I think this movie really made a good point to show who Lois has evolved into over the years. How she ruthlessly interviewed Clark, despite being romantically involved with him, because she’s a reporter, and it was her journalistic integrity that was driving her, not her feelings for him. And then, she went and got help from the other heroes to help rescue him because she’s still brave enough to do something, even though she doesn’t have any powers. Because that’s the kind of person that Lois Lane is.

So, yeah. Go and see Superman. Not only because, well, he’s the best there is, but also because you might learn something about comic books. Most people probably didn’t even know who Mr. Terrific was before this movie. And Guy Gardner is probably one of the least known Green Lanterns there is. And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
