The Bob’s Burgers Movie is an animated musical comedy based on the cartoon sitcom on Fox of the same name. All of the regular cast members from the show came back for the movie. H. Jon Benjamin, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, Larry Murphy, John Roberts, Kristen Schaal, Kevin Kline, Zach Galifinakis, Gary Cole, Robert Ben Garant, David Herman, Sam Seder, and all of the other Bob’s Burgers regulars that usually have one liners for their characters throughout the series. Almost everybody showed up to have a cameo.
The movie is a musical. Now, Bob’s Burgers has had songs in their episodes before. And I’m not opposed to it. But I think there’s a difference between a 22 minute episode and an hour and a half long movie. Which is what a movie of a show essentially is. It’s an extra long episode. And as somebody who’s seen every episode of Bob’s Burgers, which is a show I love very much, by the way, I don’t really see that much of a difference between this episode and any other episode. This one’s just a lot longer.
The animation looks brighter, I guess? I don’t know what the different types of animations are. But they stepped it up a notch from the regular show. Added something extra to it for the movie. Put a little extra effort into it. Some shading or some extra animators. Whatever it was, it cost more money. That’s all that really matters. It was more expensive. At least, it looked that way. Good for them.
But despite spending all that money, the movie turned out to be a flop. Which is ironic, given how popular the show is. It only made $34 million on a $38 million budget. That’s obviously not a win. I know it’s normal for the Belcher family to be losing money and always late on their rent, but these are larger numbers than what they’re supposed to be paying Mr. Fischoeder on a monthly basis.
As for the movie itself, it’s a good story. If it were an episode, it would be a good episode. The usual stuff happens, though. It’s nothing out of the ordinary. The restaurant is on the verge of closing. The kids are going through something at school. There’s a murder. The murder is new. Not too many murders on the show… And of course, Tina is obsessed with Jimmy jr.’s butt. Despite it being just another episode, though, it’s like it’s a three part episode. Like, you had to wait another week to see the second part to find out there was a third part. And Then wait another week to finally see the end. But this is a movie, so you get to see it all at one time. Which makes it better, at least.
So, yeah. Go and see The Bob’s Burgers Movie. If you like the show, and you should, you’ll like the movie. All of your favorite characters are there. For at least one line. Except Marshmallow. I didn’t see Marshmallow. But what are you gonna do? And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
