Slotherhouse is a 2023 horror comedy film involving a murderous sloth being taken from its natural habitat in the rainforests of Panama and winding up in a sorority, Sigma Lambda Theta, where it ends up killing most of the girls on a deadly rampage. It is a campy, B-movie with low production value and unknown actors. The bad acting and writing make up for its lack of budget, though. As it’s way too fun of a movie to dislike just because it wasn’t some big studio production. It’s hilarious the way most B-movies are. And not because it’s bad. This one was actually trying to be funny, and it worked.
In what might be one of my new favorite movies, Slotherhouse had me laughing almost the entire time. From the very beginning, where the sloth takes out a crocodile, to the end, where it gets in a gun fight with the main character Emily. This movie is just chocked full of wackiness. And the puppet they used for the sloth is so awesome. It’s so lifelike. It really does look like a real sloth. The movements that it does are hilarious. It’s popping open beers and taking pictures with people. Just all kinds of sloth-like hilarity.
And I know it’s a B-movie and all. And I know that in B-movies, the acting is going to be bad. But some of the acting is worse than others. The one chick, Zenny, is way over the top with her bad acting. I don’t know if she was doing it on purpose, or if that was just the way she did it, and they decided to keep it as a joke. Either way, I hope she puts that on her acting resume and looks back on it 20 years down the line.
But, while watching the movie, I did an actual count of how many people the sloth, her name is “Alpha” by the way, killed throughout the entire movie. Alpha killed a confirmed 14 people throughout the movie. Confirmed meaning the corpse was shown on screen. But there were a possible 8 more because of a shower scene where there was a whole group of girls that could have been electrocuted. But they never showed, or told, if everybody died. So, I couldn’t count that group. Either way, congratulations Alpha. 14 is a high number for a first-time horror movie.
So, yeah. Go and see Slotherhouse. It’s the best movie about sloths you’ll see this year. Or any year, probably. I don’t know how many sloth movies you’re watching. Maybe you’re a sloth aficionado. And if you are, maybe you will see a better movie about sloths. I guess that’s on me. And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
