The World’s End is a 2013 science fiction comedy by director Edgar Wright, starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan, and Rosamund Pike. It is the third film in the “Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy” along with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. The movie involves five friends going back to their hometown to go on a pub crawl through 12 pubs when they find out that the town has been taken over by aliens who have been replacing people. They decide to finish the pub crawl, so the aliens don’t figure out that they know they’ve discovered that they know the aliens are indeed aliens.

I think this is funnier than Hot Fuzz was. Hot Fuzz had its moments, but this was a lot more spontaneous than the last movie. Mainly because of Simon Pegg’s character, Gary King. That was kind of the point of his character. To be impulsive and reckless. And he really played it up all throughout the movie. Which played well against his four counterparts. It didn’t help that they were all middle aged trying to do a pub crawl. I’m middle aged now. And I don’t want to do pub crawls anymore either.

It’s funny though, how it just suddenly turns into a science fiction movie. Like, you’re not expecting it. It’s just five guys drinking in a pub, and then all of a sudden, this kid’s a robot. It really comes out of nowhere. It turns what seems to be a comedy about one thing into a completely different movie about something else in the blink of an eye.

And the fact that they just keep on going with the pub crawl after they find out that the whole town is made of aliens is hilarious to me. Because they obviously know that you know. So, if they know you know, and you think that they don’t know, why would it be a good idea to get even more drunk? To make bad decisions and make your reactions and motor skills less reliable? And there’s 12 bars on the pub crawl. You’re going to walk through town, drinking 12 beers with aliens chasing after you? I wouldn’t do that. Those aliens would easily catch me…

The aliens are more like robots than they are aliens, though. Their body parts detach and there’s this blue liquid that comes out of them. There’s this scene where one of them uses the other’s legs as arms and is twirling its legs on its rotors like some kind of external wood-chipper. It’s kind of crazy, actually. But that’s what an alien robot would probably do when you think about it. I mean, if they could detach random limbs and reattach them to other sockets on their bodies. Never thought I’d have to type a sentence like that again…

So, yeah. Go and see The World’s End. It’s a funny movie. It makes you think about the end of the world. And aliens. And being middle aged. It’s a wacky, fun-for-the-whole-family kind of movie. But more than that, it’ll make you laugh. And in the end, isn’t that what we’re all looking for? And as always, keep on watching, with a smile on your face…
