We had a movie review double feature tonight. Our first movie was a comedy from genius writers and television show producers Key and Peele called “Keanu”. It’s about a kitten that gets mixed up in all sorts of crazy adventures and gangster-ass shit while making connections to the criminal underworld and getting various names and titles bestowed upon him while he does it.
Jordan Peele wrote it with Alex Rubens, but neither he nor Key directed it. This comes after the end of their show, which ran for five seasons, and I personally was a huge fan of. There’s a couple of jokes that come from the show inserted into the movie if you’re paying attention, like “Liam Neesons” and “how white you sound”.
The cast has a lot of big names for a movie with such a low budget. Luiz Guzman, Anna Farris, Tiffany Haddish, Method Man, Will Forte. Keanu Reeves even does the voice OF the kitten in one of the scenes. That didn’t come cheap.
Overall, the movie was as good as their show was. The writing gave way to some talented actors who really know their craft. I don’t think Will Forte is the greatest actor ever, but I definitely don’t think anything bad about him. And Luiz Guzman… Luiz Guzman could be playing a Swedish woman with his thick Puerto Rican accent, and you would still think he was doing it right. And I think Tiffany Haddish was a great choice for the leading lady for this picture. She just kind of, seemed like the part, if that makes any sense…
I think it’s weird that I really don’t remember anything about this movie coming out. I’d never even heard about it until Amy showed it to me on Hulu. You’d think I would have at least known that Key and Peele made a movie. I knew about all the other movies that Peele made. All of his horror movies and other projects. I just never heard about this one, apparently.
